before reading these articles i was confident that India was a’developing country’and my thought was confirmed when i read the first article by Jayati ghosh.
He speaks about the lack of development causing mass unemployment,”95% of all workers are in informal employment”.
this usually means that they work with small unregistered enterprises showing proof that the government are not providing a sufficient amount of jobs. Jayati also mentions that their per capita income iremains below $2,000 and that is clearly not enough to live on.
now the second article shocked me as the opening line was “india is developing at a neck breaking pace”
raka then goes on about the many new roads and highways and cars being produced. akhil paul then moves it along and speaks about the health and education in inda. 2.7million people live with disabilities in india but most of the public places are not accomidated for the disabled. it was also brought to my attention that the goverment in india spend less that 4% of their gdp on health and educucation,12% of the children aged from 5-15 suffer are affected by child labor and 2.4 million people live with hiv/aids

i personally think the quote on the board is saying. When you aware something is about to happen and you are aware that you have to wait the anticipation is worst that the actual even
“maid servant living alone In a house.”
this sentence is Interesting because I believe everything is put in the book for a reason therefore the writer wanted you to know to know that the maid servant lived alone in the house. Clearly something is going to happen the fact that the maid Is alone instantly makes them appear defenceless to the reader.
sight: fog,boarded houses,police tape,park with broken equipment.
hear: rustling of trees/bushes,foot steps, whistling, wind.
smell: sewers, wet grass.

essay
In both versions of metamorphosis, Gregors death is presented as a relief not only for Gregors family but for Gregor himself. When the family find out that Gregors they don’t react in any sort of way they just brush it off. After the death they then move to a smaller house and continue living their lives giving off the impression that their lives were at a standstill when Gregor was alive.
I feel that Gregor dying was a relief for himself because all the pain he was enduring during his time alive, with the apple stuck in his back. He was physically damaged and also emotionally damaged. Gregor was a family man he loved providing for his family and seeing his family happy, it was both clear in the book and film that he was grateful for his family tolerating him and wanted to change back and return to work. all of these facts would of meant that Gregor definitely felt bad about the fact that his mum and dad now had to work and his sister had to study extra hard in order to find a high paying job.
Kafka’s version lets us know that Gregor in pain when the narrator says,
“The rotten apple in his back and the inflamed area, entirely covered with white dust, he hardly noticed.”
the word ‘inflamed’ which was used in this quote to describe Gregors back gives off the impression that he was in a lot of pain as the word inflamed is usually linked with heavy swelling or a burning feeling. ‘The rotting apple’ I think Kafka used the word rotting because you link the word with a long period of time. The word rotting suggest to the reader that the apple has been lodged in his back for a long period of time.
‘Entirely covered with white dust’
The word ‘entirely’ is an exaggeration. Instead of Kafka saying the top of his back or the middle he uses entirely to exaggerate the amount of area covered in white dust.
Whereas in Swanton’s film version, it focuses more on the family’s point of view rather than Gregor. When the made reveals Gregor death the family hardly reacts. The camera focuses on the family as they all look down at the lifeless body. Gregory sister looks away and does a deep sigh. The sigh gave off the impression that she was upset at her brother’s death but it also was a sigh of relief. The scene before the family find out about Gregor death is actually quite emotional. This is seen where greter explodes and shows her real feeling towards Gregor and try to persuade her parents that they need to get rid of him. After her rant he walks away slowly towards his bedroom dragging his broken foot along behind him. Just before he takes his last breath the camera shows the night sky, the big clock tower that stood in front of his window and sad music quietly plays in the background. The detail in this scene communicates the audience that this was the end. The little clip of the window and the clock tower is Swanton’s way of telling us he was trapped that was Gregors last view of the outside world, once he changed into a beetle he never got to leave his room again.
The slow movement from Gregory and the sad music in the back ground built up the tension because it made you aware that something dramatic was about to happen. So when Gregory’s family hardly reacted after the scene of his death was emotionally tense communicated to the audience his family wasn’t emotionally connected to him. However this also showed how a characters attitude towards another can change drastically compared from the start to the end because at the start of the metamorphosis when Gregor first transforms it’s his sister that panics and is worried and she is also the only one who fed him and cleaned his room yet at the end of the metamorphosis she was the one saying that the family needed to get rid of him and how he no longer had the soul or mind of Gregor.
Kafka’s version of the metamorphosis portrays that Gregor death is from pain whereas Swanton’s plays it out to be more of a death caused by emotional neglect.
Kafka presents this by making sure he focuses on Gregory physical problems.
‘As a result of his suffering condition. He had to guide himself through the difficulty of turning around with his head’
This is just after the scene where Gregory sister just exploded and ranted about how the family need to get rid of him however this text focuses on Gregory physical disabilities
‘only when he was already in the door did he turn is head, not completely, because he felt his neck growing stiff’ this is yet another example of a text where Kafka is focusing harder on physical rather than emotional even this is supposed to see an emotional scene.
Whereas in Swanton’s film version, he portrays Gregors death as a result of emotional distress by using specific camera angles at the right moments. The scene where Gregor witnesses his sister ranting about getting rid of him is expressed as quite an emotional moment in this film. When Gregory begins turning to head back to his room although you can see his broken leg, grey fur covered skin and the apple lodged in his back it wasn’t the man focus. the camera focuses on his face as he looks back before entering his room, it focus on his eyes which have bags smothered under them communicating his tiredness to the audience however his eyes are also filled with tears letting us understand that in this particular moment he is emotional. The music choice in this scene also very much contributes to heating the tension, Swanton doesn’t use loud dramatic music but uses the opposite. He uses a quiet song with many string instruments the violin in particular. Although not loud and dramatic it gave off double the effect because you felt Gregors pain through each and every one of the instruments.
The last scene where Gregor takes his last breath is by far the saddest scene, he looks up out of his window however appears to be in 1st person mode, and this made you feel like you could see everything Gregor saw minutes before his death.
Throughout this essay in have tried to communicate to the reader that Kafka was more about the physical attire but Swanton was more in touch with the emotional, I have used quotations and referred to many scenes from both versions to prove this.
selecting quotations
in both the film and the novella, gregor’s death is presented as a relief to gregor.
evidence from the book-
Relief is shown in the book when gregor dies and Mr Samsa says ” now we can give thanks to god”
this quote shows that gregors father is almost thanking god for the death of his son however i don’t feel he is conscious that in the body of this beetle is his actual son, the one that once was the provider of the household and took care of them.
evidence from the film-
the scene in the film where gregor dies is quite an oxymoronic scene. when the family realizes that gregors dead a sad song begins to play in the background,
transition part3
gcse’s were round the corner and its at this point in time you could see who was preparing and who wasn’t.
some people say that people react to stress differently, some people fess up and confront the thing that’s causing the stress and others would neglect it.make the issue discreet.
but that’s how i spent my l life, putting on fake smiles pretending everything was ok and holding in all thoughts. it became a way of life, a habit a easy way out.it was easy to say ‘im fine’ or ‘im ok’ who actually tells people there issues, who openly says i haven’t been feeling like my self lately all my ‘friends’ are drifting away from me.i feel lonely.
Transition part 2
The bench was quite defaced, it was painted sea blue but had patches of silver for where the paint was rubbing off. It had many chipped corners and had a dent in the middle. The bottom of the bend was smothered in rust from the weather and often smelt on the other hand this bench was a pure gold throne with diamonds encrusted in the sides.this bench had such a uninviting appearance but such a supreme status. However you could question if it was the bench that was significant or that particular area as there two more identical benches in the playground.one bench layed in front of the PE office and the other slouched against a white wall which faced the PE office but was more closer to the lunch hall.
Our bench kneel-ed in top center of the playground you was able to view everything from this spot, you was able to see the teachers coming and warn each other to hide our snacks and phones. you was able to see the confrontations between the year 7’s and peep in on peoples conversations.
Not being on the bench didn’t mean u was ‘up there’ but it meant you had no or power in anything, the bench was your weapon, your watch-mark, the bench you and you was the bench.
The bench became a part of me.
If i entered the playground to witness someone sitting in my spot it was a sign of disrespect. i would automatically dismiss the physical appearance and focus on the power behind it.
Sitting on the bench then became a mental thing, i began developing a bench in my mind and would put it in all situations. Due to the bench being so supreme in my mind i would feel that i was always alright and would dismiss the truth like the benches looks.
I was changing, through my eyes this golden throne was a defaced bench like how i saw it when i first entered ln
London nautical.i began to question my self ‘what is there to be proud about?’ Will this bench help me reach places in life? Pass my gcse’s?.

cover work
The sound of boys playing pat ball echoed through my brain, i found the sound irritating yet soothing. i watched the crowd of boys run towards the lunch hall i looked around me and saw all my ‘friends’ gathering. There was silence, then they all laughed psychotically, holding there stomachs, whacking each other and objects around them to emphasize how funny the joke was. i on the other hand didn’t even hear joke but still found my self laughing, not because i didn’t want to be left out but because i found their grotesque laughs quite amusing. i hadn’t been feeling my self recently, i found my self drifting from people who i thought would stay by my side and began pairing with people i once never knew. i looked across the play ground which was quite packed and noticed that it was very segregated.you had the whites by the gates, the blacks on the bench by the mobiles and the people considered geeks by the water fountain. however here and there you would find the odd Latino ,sitting on the bench was confirmation that you was one of the cool kids. i always sat on the end,i was the guy with the gossip, the guy with the banter, i was ‘the guy’.
however recently i didn’t enjoy sitting on the bench, i didn’t fit the standards anymore i didn’t enjoy mocking people, play fighting,’bantering’ to be honest i enjoyed silence. i became distanced my self from the bench and everyone who sat around it however it didn’t go unnoticed, people began asking questions like whats wrong with you? why you so anti social?
i felt like i needed a break from everyone and everything was it wrong?
gregors death
9-6-15
‘we must try to get rid of it’- the use of ‘it’ dehumanizes gregor as he isn’t being referred to as he/she or even by his name but ‘it’.
the use of the word ‘it’ when describing something is usually used when talking about an object or unidentified presence.
‘but how can it be gregor,if it were gregor,he would have long ago realized that a communal life among human beings is not possible with such an animal and would have gone way voluntarily’-in this mini speech gregor sister is suggesting that this creature no longer has the mind of a human.
grete’s language/tone-
her tone when she first starts talking is actually quite sad/upset but then turns very aggressive as if she is trying to persuade but also scare her parents into taking sides with her.
gregor’s appearance and movement-
through out grete’s speech the camera would shortly show gregors face. he didn’t actually have a facial expression because all his emotion lay gently in his eyes. through his eyes i sensed pain, betrayal and almost self hatred as he hangs his head and limps back over to his room. his appearance slightly gave it way that this part of the movie was going to be significant as his once healthy brown thick outer shell was now grey flat and looked almost moldy, there was a complete lack of liveliness in his appearance.
music-
the music is quite soft and quit how ever only adds fire to the tension in the room and adds emphasis to gretes speech and the reaction from gregor.
perspective and camera angles-
the camera man is almost filming to show us the view from gregors perspective.if u watch it u will notice that the mum, sister and dad are often in the she shot however gregor is kept separated except from the last shot where gregor walks back into his room
dramatic irony
Point:
Shakespeare decieves the reader and titus into believing that tamoras a good person and is going to forgive titus for killing her son.

This shows the audience that tamora is forgving titus for using her son as an sacrifice although we/thenaudience all know that thats not the case.
Extension:
The word”innocence” gives the impression that titus is an innocent person known for goodness not badness.
Paragraph 2:
Point:
shakespeare reaveals to the audience tamoras real plan, her plan to kill the andronicus’s
