English comparison essay

the poems ‘war photographer’ and ‘remains’ have a theme of power throughout them in many different way whether it be guilt, conflict, memory, etc… during this essay i will be identifying the similarities or differences between these interpretations and will give my opinion.the poem war photographer presumably follows a man who earns his wage by photographing war devastated environments.and remains is a first hand written poem that speaks about a guard of some sort that shoots a looter, the poem then goes on to explaining how it effected him mentally and physically.

the power of responsibility is shown in war photographer when the author writes “he a priest preparing to intone a mass”. the author gets it across to the audience that the war photographers job comes with alot of responsibility by comparing him to a priest preparing to intone a mass.it also touches on the power of guilt as it is very clear that he doesn’t like what he sees as a result of his photos but he continues.

very similarly,in remains the line “possibly armed possibly not” defines the amount of authority he has as he clearly has the power to open fire on a suspect without being a hundred percent on whether they are a threat or not. having a job that comes along with this much authority and power would mean that your job would therefore be a responsibility in its self. the fact that his intentions could of been to protect himself and the other possibly endangered civilians could be quite a valid argument however the use of the world ‘possibly’ confirms his level of authority as he can make assumptions without being punished.

another power that can be identified in the poem ‘war photographer’ is conflict.
this can be seen in the line ‘a hundred agonies in black and white’.the use of the word ‘agony’ shows that he shows empathy for the diseased soldiers and could possibly feel guilty for the fact that his job is to capture them at their worst. the guilt could also come from the fact that he knows once he brings all the photos back to the publisher, only a few photos will be selected meaning only a few of the diseased soldiers will gain credit, also meaning that all the other soldiers and their efforts will be dismissed.

The negro walks on eggshells

During this very short essay i will be comparing shirlry j.scott’s the negro walks on ice to life today.

Shirley j.scott’s “the negro walks on egg shells” speaks about the day to day struggle of a ‘colored person’.
In the beggining of her text she says “You don’t feel different, yet you are treated differently.”
This can easily be confirmed by a negro of today, i myself can say that this still occurs in todays society. I have been removed from shops such as john lewis because of my appearance.
“You are stuck at the bottom of the ladder — not because of what you do but because you are a Negro.”
Personally as a black male i feel like praise isnt common, i find that you are often told you can to better which would correspond with the saying “you’ll have to work twice as hard as the white male”.

“Your children present a special problem. In addition to washing, mending, cooking and healing little hurts, sometimes early in their lives, you must explain the taunts of Johnny Whiteboy.”

From a young age my mum made me aware of the “white privilage” i was always told that the white boy sitting next to me in class will always have more options than me no matter what grades they get. However i was also made aware that no all people are of that mindset i was told to give people a chance and be opened minded.

Overall i think that shirley j.scotts ‘the negro walks on eggshells’ is very revlivant to life in todays society to a certain extent.
I dont think that the struggle of a negro today is as harsh to one from in the past however i still feel that the similarities are there and its sad and although movements such as black lives matter are about, police brutality and racism against blacks still exist.

Class in blood brothers

Russell highlights class in blood brothers through contrast. He uses stero types to get his point across to the reader, this is seen when you compare mrs johnstones personal life to mrs lyons.mrs johnstones is a single mother of 7 with twins on the way and mrs lyons is a housewife to a very well of man. The difference beteen their classes can be seen through the way they communicate.
“Well, i just thought,im sorry,…”
this is from the scene where mrs johnstone comes to work and starts fussing over the baby.
She is seen to be apolagising and when an adult apolagizes it usually means that the person on the other hand is their superior.

In my groups performance we wanted our audience to think about the feelings of not only the woman but the men when they were separated. To do this we used split scene, switching from one scene to the other then back to the first. We believed that the switch back to the first scene would create an effect which left the audience feeling how the performers were expressing themselves.

Unfortunately we were not able to perform due to time running faster than we thought it would, but in our starting scene we come up with the woman and her family sitting around a dinner table but with no husband , which caused them all feeling depressed and heartbroken due to the obvious reason of it not being the same, additionally they didn’t know weather he was alive or not.

The second second would of switched to the man in the trenches, one man in particular being distressed due to him not being able to be with his family , he would of broke down crying. This action symbolises the effect that war had on men, not only were they torn away from their family’s but their life was at risk.

The last scene would of been the wife performing a soliloquy, expressing how she felt about the whole situation. I thought this effect would of been really powerful because it would of been some sort of literal interaction which we don’t often get during performances. The soliloquy would of been depressing which would of left the audience feeling her pain.

Many men went to war but not all returned so we also wanted to focus on that, the whole idea of men being dragged away from their family and not being able to return, this would have a long long term affect.

The character of the Foreman gives us an insight of who he is , being or not being a manager. In this scene the foreman reveals the key to his motivation.. Fear. Whilst the workers are working intensely hard on finishing this wall , due to the amount of pressure they have on their shoulders they cannot concentrate to protect the country. Inconveniently whilst on the job one of the workers gets killed, not by anybody but a piece of equipment. Once the Foreman investigates what’s gone on his two main objectives are to get rid of the body and to get his workers working as if the situation never occurred. His motivation to disregard what has gone on is the whole concept of his fear. He is extremely scared because he knows what his job is , the city depends on it , so does his life. I would show his nervousness by making him react in a way resembling him panicking for example the quick movement from one spot to another, shouting at his workers to get rid of it, turning away in distraught. I would also want him to have some sort of interaction with the audience looking at them to indicate not to mention anything.

Q1-personally i think that Lear saluting throughout this scene was to exaggerate his trust and respect for his troops to the audience.however i also feel that it was cockiness, usually the person with the higher status is saluted to so him saluting to his troops was almost him saying ‘ i dont even need to worry i know you guys got me’.

– the frozen depiction i created consisted of lears army positioned opposite his daughters army.he is stood in-front of his army saluting with a smile on his face looking straight ahead.

-i made sure he was smiling so that audience would pick up on his confidence.in the previous scene he shot an innocent person so the audience would of already been aware that he was loosing his mind.so him smiling was to also concern the audience, the fact that he was smiling and just about to go to war was suppose to confuse the audience.

english essay

During this essay I will be focusing on the 3 different perspectives of Mumbai from Abdul, Asha and Sunil. The three characters from Katherine boo’s book ‘Behind the beautiful forever’. We are going to be analysing their points of view on Annawadi and how their statuses in the slum affect their judgement. Firstly we meet Abdul who is a trash seller. Let’s talk about Asha who is an unofficial slum lord, She makes it very clear that she wants everyone to know she has money as she even has designer napkins. On the other hand there’s Abdul who is a garbage trader, he can easily be seen as the main character and lastly there’s asha. He is very similar to abdul however he is new to garbage trading game.

First in the book we are introduced to the character Abdul who is 15.straight away we are made aware that he is a garbage trader and that his family depends on him financially. Abdul doesn’t seem like a bad person himself however he often speaks badly of the other annawadian people. “The better I know you, the more I dislike you”. Personally I feel like he is trying to say people are not the same as they come across once you get to know them. This quote makes him come across as the sort of person who keeps themselves to them self.

Another one of Abdul’s quoted are “even goats eyes were heavy with sleep”. i think that this quote is used to emphasize the people of annawadi slums work ethic. Personally i think this the reason the slums are so restless is because all the people there are poor and the government aren’t helping them, therefore the people of the slums are constantly on their grind. The author could of used a Human as an example but using the goat emphasized the authors point.

Lastly we meet sunil,he is a young boy that is also a garbage trader however he however much more mature than the other kids his age. Sunil grew up in and kids home and therefore sees the world as cold. The people that took care of him in the home are portrayed as spiteful and bad, this statement can be backed up when sunils speaks that every time the photographers and journalist would come to kids home the kids would be given ice cream to make sure they are happy and speak good of the careers. This would majorly effect a young child, realizing that the only time people are nice to you is when they want you to do them a favor and would of made his sour attitude towards the people of annawadia understandable. This simple story from his child hood about the ice cream shows that the people of annawadia only care for how they are seen by other and will do anything to keep a good reputation .

Abdul’s adventures part1

just by breathing in you would be able to tell you were in the rich sides of Mumbai, the air was scented with money and hope and wasn’t as thick as the toxic air we lived on in the slums. The side walks weren’t smothered in torn plastic bottles and the roads didn’t swallow your foot if you stepped to heavy unlike back home.
The cars here were nice, they were shiny and actually had 4 wheels and glass in the windows. The cars here made our 3 wheeled trash cans look tiny, these cars were huge and the doors themselves were probably taller than me. I liked it here everyone looked after their appearance and walked around with confidence. i hated the slums, everyone was miserable and had the tendency to complain about everything. the air was scented with poverty, grief and depression.
i had got used to the new traffic system over-here,the green light means go, the red light meant stop and the yellow light is to say slow down. when i went back to the slums i would often try it to the young ones and the would always get excited and compliment my ‘intelligence’.
today i wasn’t here to look through their goldmines(bins) i had decided that today i was going to roam about and appreciate the beautiful-ness rather than its trash.
the police over here were scary, the looked like mini hulks compared to the slums police. they all had light clear skin, white teeth and were all highly muscular.whereas our police were fat, diseased, evil middle aged men.
i walked past the hotels entrance and headed towards the car park where he could admire the cars without being center of attention. i instantly saw a white changeover had spent so much time over i here that i was also learning the name of car brands. next to it were four policemen all drinking coffee, i was aware how they would reacts but i just had to admire its shiny white superior from up close.
