During this essay I will be focusing on the 3 different perspectives of Mumbai from Abdul, Asha and Sunil. The three characters from Katherine boo’s book ‘Behind the beautiful forever’. We are going to be analysing their points of view on Annawadi and how their statuses in the slum affect their judgement. Firstly we meet Abdul who is a trash seller. Let’s talk about Asha who is an unofficial slum lord, She makes it very clear that she wants everyone to know she has money as she even has designer napkins. On the other hand there’s Abdul who is a garbage trader, he can easily be seen as the main character and lastly there’s asha. He is very similar to abdul however he is new to garbage trading game.

First in the book we are introduced to the character Abdul who is 15.straight away we are made aware that he is a garbage trader and that his family depends on him financially. Abdul doesn’t seem like a bad person himself however he often speaks badly of the other annawadian people. “The better I know you, the more I dislike you”. Personally I feel like he is trying to say people are not the same as they come across once you get to know them. This quote makes him come across as the sort of person who keeps themselves to them self.

Another one of Abdul’s quoted are “even goats eyes were heavy with sleep”. i think that this quote is used to emphasize the people of annawadi slums work ethic. Personally i think this the reason the slums are so restless is because all the people there are poor and the government aren’t helping them, therefore the people of the slums are constantly on their grind. The author could of used a Human as an example but using the goat emphasized the authors point.

Lastly we meet sunil,he is a young boy that is also a garbage trader however he however much more mature than the other kids his age. Sunil grew up in and kids home and therefore sees the world as cold. The people that took care of him in the home are portrayed as spiteful and bad, this statement can be backed up when sunils speaks that every time the photographers and journalist would come to kids home the kids would be given ice cream to make sure they are happy and speak good of the careers. This would majorly effect a young child, realizing that the only time people are nice to you is when they want you to do them a favor and would of made his sour attitude towards the people of annawadia understandable. This simple story from his child hood about the ice cream shows that the people of annawadia only care for how they are seen by other and will do anything to keep a good reputation .
